Our First Cooking Class!

Image
It’s hard to judge one incredible day from another, honestly, but not sure Robert can take a third – so glad tomorrow is our “off” day and we can actually relax just a little bit!   (Although I am thinking about the Natural History Museum…)  Up this morning about 7 (which is really late for us!) but as our Casa Jacaranda cooking class didn’t meet until 10 am, I figured a little sleeping in was permitted.   The class information had us meeting at Quentin Café , (of which there are several in town) and said they had good food, so we decided to breakfast there.   Uber only took about 7-8 minutes to get us there – not sure of the area, possibly Condesa , but it was really lovely.   We both ordered the chilaquiles, R had red sauce, and I had their green, at the waiter’s recommendation.   Turns out the green was the spicier of the two!   I also had a scrambled egg with mine.   R had coffee, and I had excellent hot chocolate, along with orang...

We’ve Made it to Villahermosa!

Image
A day late, but we made it to Villahermosa (in the state of Tabasco ), the farthest east point on our trip – almost to Yucatan!   But to start the day … we really slept in this morning – didn’t get up until 6:40 am, which is really late for us!   But the wind outside is still truly howling!   When we got to the hotel yesterday, the door to the balcony of our room was locked, and I couldn’t figure out why!   After listening to the wind howl most of the night, I could now understand!   Wow!   When the wind blows here, it’s truly incredible!    Fortunately for us, our car was parked very close to the front door, so after a very nice buffet breakfast here at the hotel, we packed up and were on our way.   I wanted to be out by 8, but we were probably a few minutes past that.   As I had walked across the street last evening to get snacks, I figured I had done my “wind bit” so felt no compunction leaving R to put the suitcases in the trunk,...

Heading Home!

Coda written by Robert (and edited by m, as I went to bed at 7:30 pm but back up by 11:15 pm!) Up early to a rainy morning in Veracruz .   The temperature in our room got up to 72 degrees.   A little checking on line revealed some interesting cultural facts about the Veracruz area.   First, the hotels here do not provide heating because the average temperature is warm enough, even in January, their coldest month.   Second, apparently many restaurants do not serve wine because the local residents prefer other forms of alcoholic beverages: beer, tequila, etc. and wine carries a high tax!   Wine is just not popular here, as it is not grown locally. Even though our flight to Tijuana is scheduled for 1:25, we left the hotel at about 8:30, getting to the airport just about 9 am.   Among other things, we needed to return the rental car, which involved settling the issue of the damaged tire and (as it turned out) the damaged wheel as well.   By the time ...

Back to Boca del Rio/Veracruz!

Image
Up this morning in Villahermosa with the intention of trying to get to San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan and the 16 th head.   However, fate – in the form of a 2-hour traffic jam, had other ideas.   So, while we can say we tried, we didn’t really get very far!     About an hour out of Villahermosa , the traffic stopped … and when I say stopped, it was incredible.   It just … stopped .   We literally inched along for almost two solid hours before we came to the problem.   This part of the highway was divided.   We, going north, were on the lower road, while those heading south were on the upper.   And apparently, a semi on the upper road somehow went off it – I’ve never seen such a huge section of guard rail just taken out – and the semi came down the hill and ended up on the north bound side, with the semi part of the truck spread out all across the roadway and median strip in between.   R took some photos – ...
