Hello from San Diego!


I hadn’t actually planned on blogging tonight – figuring this was just a transit day, but R brought the camera along to dinner, so I am now compelled to write!

 

Up this morning about 5 for the final pack-up and house-close-down.  We got on the road about 7:30.  A really lovely day for a drive across the desert – especially as the past two days have been so terribly windy and cold!  Today, however, was lovely; clear and calm, and perfect for driving!  We made really good time, and made it to our lovely hotel in San Diego about 1:45 pm.  

 

We have broken the Hilton chains (finally!) and are staying at the Best Western Plus Island Palms Resort and Marina on Shelter Island – and it is absolutely lovely!  Our dear friends, Lisa and Jon Walters, always stay here when they visit San Diego, and we can well understand why!  Fortunately for us, our room – 513 – in the Casa Mare building, second floor, facing the bay, was ready and truly, it is amazing!  It is a really HUGE double room with a massive TV, spacious patio with two chairs and table, as well as a wet bar, microwave, fridge, table and chairs!  Very, very comfortable, and I wish we were staying for more than one night – but believe me, we will definitely be back!

We settled in and rested a bit before our 6 pm dinner reservation at Jack & Guilio’s Italian Restaurant in Old Town.  That is really our favorite SD restaurant, and one to which I have been going now for over 50 years!  (SOOOOO hard to believe, but it’s true…). Their Scampi ala Guilio is truly memorable – and of course, it’s what I always order when we go there!  So of course, I ordered it tonight – and it was as fabulous was ever!  Rhad their Scampi ala Diavalo, which was scampi in a spicy tomato sauce.  R started dinner with a bowl of their excellent shrimp bisque; I had a dinner salad, which was huge!  Neither of us had any room left for dessert, so we just headed back to the hotel and are in for the night!

Up tomorrow about 5, as I want to be heading for the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) to Tijuana Airport by 6:15 am!  So – more later, from Mexico City!

Wow!   Okay … yesterday was a very rainy, wet kind of day.   I mean, it started as a literal gale force wind in Veracruz , which then turned into rain by the time we got to the state of Tabasco .   Very gray; very wet, on and off.   Definitely not suited for shorts and t-shirts any longer; happy to be back in jeans, for sure! At any rate, we got up this morning, and while the forecast was for more rain most of the day, it turns out, so far at least, that the rain has held off – thankfully, as we wanted to do some outdoor exploring!   We had two objectives here in Villahermosa – the Parque Museo La Venta , and the Museo Regional Anthropologica Carlos Pellicer Carmona . Decided to Uber to the Parque Museo first, as it opens at 8 am.   Not that we were there then; we actually got there closer to 9 am.   But as it was such a gray day, we didn’t think there would be a huge crowd waiting to get in. We’ve Made it to Villahermosa!

A day late, but we made it to Villahermosa (in the state of Tabasco ), the farthest east point on our trip – almost to Yucatan!   But to start the day … we really slept in this morning – didn’t get up until 6:40 am, which is really late for us!   But the wind outside is still truly howling!   When we got to the hotel yesterday, the door to the balcony of our room was locked, and I couldn’t figure out why!   After listening to the wind howl most of the night, I could now understand!   Wow!   When the wind blows here, it’s truly incredible!    Fortunately for us, our car was parked very close to the front door, so after a very nice buffet breakfast here at the hotel, we packed up and were on our way.   I wanted to be out by 8, but we were probably a few minutes past that.   As I had walked across the street last evening to get snacks, I figured I had done my “wind bit” so felt no compunction leaving R to put the suitcases in the trunk,...

Heading Home!

Coda written by Robert (and edited by m, as I went to bed at 7:30 pm but back up by 11:15 pm!) Up early to a rainy morning in Veracruz .   The temperature in our room got up to 72 degrees.   A little checking on line revealed some interesting cultural facts about the Veracruz area.   First, the hotels here do not provide heating because the average temperature is warm enough, even in January, their coldest month.   Second, apparently many restaurants do not serve wine because the local residents prefer other forms of alcoholic beverages: beer, tequila, etc. and wine carries a high tax!   Wine is just not popular here, as it is not grown locally. Even though our flight to Tijuana is scheduled for 1:25, we left the hotel at about 8:30, getting to the airport just about 9 am.   Among other things, we needed to return the rental car, which involved settling the issue of the damaged tire and (as it turned out) the damaged wheel as well.   By the time ...
